Nine students of the University of Ghana accused of fingering an alleged phone and laptop thief have been granted bail by a court in Accra. The students pleaded not guilty to four charges of conspiracy to commit crime, assault by imprisonment, indecent assault and causing unlawful harm. They were granted a bail of GHS 9,000 each with one surety and are to reappear on May 30, 2011. Counsel for one of the accused persons told Joy News’ Francisca Forson his client has been wrongfully accused. According to him, the ninth accused person was not even on campus when the incident occurred. He hinted they will be filing notice of alibi to prove the innocence of his client. The accused persons were identified by the victim, Amina Haruna, during an identification parade at the Police HQ before being hauled to court. Meanwhile some parents of the accused persons who were in court on Friday vouched for the innocence of their wards. One of them said he can die for his son, knowing too well he (son) will not be part of such an act. He said out of frustration the victim just pointed to his son as one of the culprits.
