Another road accident has claimed lives of three school children and injured one in the Ekumfi Eyisam in the Central region, throwing the entire community into shock. While this driver is likely to go unscathed as the practice is, the families of these children would lament their irreplaceable loss.
The driver of the vehicle which ran into the children was reportedly overtaking another which had stopped for the children to cross the road to school, veered off the road, instantly killing the children. In a worst case scenario, he may go to jail or simply be fined for inconsiderate driving. The question that runs through the minds of many when such accidents occur is; would drivers be that reckless if they knew such carnage is punishable by Law?Sadly, the situation is not new; the recent road accident in which a school girl was knocked down and killed instantly by a car on the George Walker Bush highway in Lapaz, Accra sparked off violent demonstration and destruction of property.Barely two years ago, the entire nation was gripped with grief at the death of 13 year old Melissa and her eight year old Brother, Francis Donkor in a preventable road accident on the Kwesiminstim highway in the western region. Last year, another school girl died on the stadium road in Cape Coast in the central region.According to the Ghana Road Safety Commission, four people die daily in road accidents. Until the road agencies in collaboration with other relevant Ministries such as Transport, Education and now Gender, Children & Social Protection, proactively push for more stringent laws to ensure the safety of school children on our roads, we only await yet another heart breaking disaster.
