The Ashanti regional Police Command has vowed to hunt down miscreants in the region. This follows attacks by armed men on unsuspecting residents in the Kumasi Metropolis on Tuesday. Addressing a Press conference, Wednesday morning, the Regional Police Commander DCOP Augustine Gyening gave a strong warning that his outfit will not leave any stone unturned to rid the region of all miscreants to ensure public security and safety in the Region. On Tuesday night, a group of armed men numbering between 30 to 50 terrorized residents of Kumasi, virtually taking over some streets amidst sporadic shootings. Traumatized residents had to run for their dear lives. DCOP Augustine Gyening also told reporters that the Command had received a reinforcement of about 200 personnel from the national Capital to help them combat crime. Subsequently, the Police has beefed its surveillance and mounted patrols in several areas in the region with special attention to flash points identified as “crime zones”, including the affordable housing area where the armed attack took place on Tuesday. According to DCOP Gyening, 21 year old Sulleman, with criminal record has been apprehended by the Police as one of the persons involved in Tuesday's attacks. This was in spite of the attackers bolting away from the scene when the police appeared. They have also been able to retrieve various items suspected to have been stolen. Even though the police has reason to believe that Tuesday’s armed attack was a reprisal for police action to rid the region of criminals, it is undaunted in its resolve to ensure maximum security in the region. Meanwhile, reports say increased Police visibility in Accra is yielding results as motorists and the general public attest to increased levels of security and discipline on the roads. According to Joynews’ Manasseh Azure Awuni, who has been monitoring the development, the increased Police presence “paints a no nonsense picture” that solicits discipline from all and sundry. Some drivers say “because you know the police are watching you, so u need to be careful, it’s helpful. It also protects u from attackers and armed drivers”. Corroborating the report, Commander Of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), ACP Awuni Angwubutoge said the move was initiated in line with the conviction that police visibility is paramount to maintenance of law and order. In a related development, okada riders in Northern regional capital, Tamale are enraged by Police action to arrest them for traffic irregularities. They contend that Heavy truck drivers who are responsible for the numerous accidents in the metropolis should rather be arrested. It is anticipated that the increased Police visibility and patrols would ensure discipline on the roads, while boosting public security and safety.
