The Madina Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service have rescued a 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) graduate from being married off to an older man and then sent to Niger.
The girl, whose name was not given by the Police for security reasons, , was arranged to be made a second wife in a three-day ceremony which started from Saturday.
Madina DOVVSU Police Commander ASP Christine Srofenyoh told Joy News they received the information from an informant and rescued the girl on Saturday.
The girl is currently with DOVVSU, she added that, the police “will be going for the father and the supposed husband.”
ASP Srofenyoh also said, “Our information is that after the marriage she will be taken to Niger.”
She said the girl has completed Junior High School but because of the marriage, “she has not been allowed to go to Senior High School.”
Meanwhile the Department of Social Welfare said it will provide temporary shelter for the rescued girl.
