Chairman of the Volta regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV has asked chiefs and opinion leaders of the Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the region to stamp their authority and prevent irate youth from engaging in further clashes in the area.
His appeal follows heightened tension over the weekend after the murder of an elderly man at Alavanyo last Thursday. No suspect has been picked up yet.
Togbe Afede intimated that the clashes caught the Volta Regional House of Chiefs by surprise, but insisted they are determined to resolve the conflicts very quickly.
A long standing feud between indigenes of Nkonya in the Biakoye district and Alavanyo in the Hohoe district, over a parcel of land, has often sparked clashes in the area.
Togbe Afede told Joy News the development is disturbing and can derail efforts to attract investments to the region.
Director of Police Operations, COP John Kudalor also told Joy News the dusk to dawn curfew imposed on the area is still in force and anyone who attempts to breach the peace will be swiftly dealt with.
Joy News' Isaac Mintah, who has been monitoring the situation reported that the clashes between the two communities and the subsequent imposition of the curfew is affecting farming and fishing activities in the towns.
The townspeople, he said, live in fear.
