The President of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Roberto Gonzalez, has commended Ghana for the efficient manner it handles safety and security issues in relation to air transportation here in Ghana.
Speaking at a meeting with Vice President, Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur on Wednesday at the Flagstaff House, Mr. Gonzalez, said Ghana continues to see tremendous growth in the aviation industry due to the seriousness the country attaches to upholding standards in the aviation sector.
Also present was Mrs Doreen Owusu Fianko, Director of Ghana Airports Company, Minister of Transport, Mrs. Dzifa Aku Attivor, Air Commodore Kwame Mamphey Director General of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, and other dignitaries.
Mr. Roberto Gonzalez is in the country to participate in the 23rd plenary session of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) currently underway in Accra.
The commission, which comprises 54 African States, is the specialised agency of the African Union responsible for Civil Aviation matters in Africa.
AFCAC facilitates cooperation and coordination among African States towards the development of integrated and sustainable Air Transport system, and fosters the implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices and development of harmonised rules and regulations, consistent with the best international practices in civil aviation.
The Vice President on his part said Ghana will continue to effectively co-operate with the International Civil Aviation Organisation to provide quality, safe and secured air transportation for users across the country.
He said although the air transport has seen a significant growth over the years, government will continue to commit more investment within the sector.
He expressed confidence in the decision by government to allow the Ghana Airports Company to retain all Airport tax its makes, in order to bring in more expansion within the sector.
