The Tarkwa Police have arrested five policemen who are said to have been caught on a closed-circuit television (CCTV) extorting money from a Chinese businessman.Led by Lance Corporal Sackey Naah-Korley, the suspects allegedly succeeded in extorting GH02, 000 as part payment of the GHC10, 000 they demanded from the victim, Dai Ming Sheng, and his wife.Unfortunately for them, the illegal operation was captured by a CCTV camera that had been in¬stalled in the house where the Chinese couple lived.
The other suspects were identi¬fied as Constables Jerotira Everest, Patrick Nimful, Richard Baah and Kweku Assah. They were said to be fully dressed in police uniform, with one of them armed.
A civilian accomplice, identified only as Richard, who allegedly led the suspects to the Chinese busi¬nessman's gate is on the run.The Western Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Abena Adiku, told the Daily Graphic that last Monday the suspects, with the aid of the accomplice, entered the residence of the businessman, who was then playing a video game with his wife, and told them that they were under arrest.Lance Corporal Naah-Korley was said to have told the victims that they were being arrested for playing the video game and that the only way out for them was to pay GHC 10,000 or follow them to the police station at that of the night.According to ASP Adiku, the businessman pleaded with the policemen to accept GHC 2,000 which was the only money available at home. She said the five suspects and their accomplice collected the part-payment of the amount and left the house, not knowing they had been captured on CCTV.ASP Adiku said the next day, Sheng took the copy of the recorded tape to the police and the suspects were identified and immediately arrested. She said GHC 1,500 out of the GHC 2,000 was retrieved from the suspects after their arrest.Investigations are ongoing, ASP Adiku added.
