The Ghana Police have justified the killing of three suspected armed robbers Friday night at Mallam Atta here in Accra. The police said they shot and killed the three men upon a tip-off.However, some residents in the area told Joy News the suspects were unarmed and accuse the police of cold-blooded shooting.Residents said they heard gunshots but they did not see arms on the suspects. One eyewitness told Joy News she thought the police could have arrested the suspects. But the police have denied the accusations. In an interview with Joy News, Accra Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tetteh, said the three suspects died during a shootout with the police.“They attempted to rob, we got there and they turned their fire on us so we have to reply fire-to-fire. Because we had a stronger fire power we were able to overcome them and in the process they were shot dead” he explained. He said three weapons were recovered from them, one was locally manufactured and two were foreign guns.He explained that “the rule of engagement is that at every point in time you don’t have to exchange your life for them (armed robbers)”.“We always want them alive but in case we can’t, we have no choice but to do the obvious”, he said.
