A 31-year-old widow says a timely report on her plight on the Multimedia platforms and subsequent response from the public saved her life as well as those of her children.
Salatu Alhassan, koko seller at Breman Nkontwima in Kumasi, said she contemplated poisoning herself and her three children after their home was ravaged by fire.
Salatu was out serving breakfast to her numerous customers when the fire started. This was a few hours after her children had gone to school.
There were no casualties but Salatu lost bags of maize she had stored to prepared koko.
After the incident, the family had no choice but to sleep outside, in the open – they slept under a mango tree.
“I then decided that I would take my own life and those of my than go through such dehumanizing conditions,” she told Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah amid sobs.
Ohemeng Tawiah first reported the plight of the family and listeners of the station, as well as Joy FM, donated copiously to support the family.
Today, Salatu is all smiles after the donation because her apartment has been renovated, thanks to the support from philanthropists.
Touched by the story of the family, Judith, a philanthropist in Accra walked to the studios of Joy FM to contribute GHC1,000. Judith and the many people who gave to support Salatu have indeed been saviours!
