Security agencies, especially the Military came under heavy criticism today as the Ghana's media joined the world to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
This year’s theme; “Ensuring the safety of journalists and media workers, combating impunity against press freedom; online safety” prompted the various media groupings to put the recent alleged brutality of journalists by some security personnel at the heart of their speeches, making a case for better treatment of the two photo journalists alleged to have been assaulted at the Independence Day parade.
One of the journalists was slapped and the other shocked at his private parts with a taser.
The military after investigation exonerated the military men involved in the incident and that has gotten media men even more furious.
Former GJA president and current Chair of the editors Forum Ghana, Adwoa Afari said the soldiers involved in the assault case ought to have taken advantage of the call by AU and ECOWAS for soldiers to invade Mali to stop the insurgents.
“As for the report exonerating the perpetrators [soldiers] one might have taken it as an April fools prang had it not come so late in the month,” she added.
She said the assault of the journalists and the investigations “are no laughing matters, simply scandalous.”
She said the victims of the assault deserve some compensation from the military authorities to make up for the pain and embarrassment caused them.
Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana, PRINPAG suggested a giant screen at the international Press Centre to document media personnel who become victims of assault by security officials.
