The International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), a world recognized centre for the training of specialists in international maritime law and an institute of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), on the 27th of April 2013, conferred on Dr. Kofi Mbiah, Chief Executive of the Ghana Shippers Authority, the IMLI Graduate International Achievement Award at the Graduation and Award Ceremony of the Institute in Malta.
The Award is in recognition of his steadfast contribution to the work of the International Maritime Community, particularly, his dedicated service to the IMO Legal Committee.
The citation accompanying the Award, noted amongst others Dr. Mbiah’s accomplishments as head of the Ghana delegation to the Legal Committee of the IMO and also acknowledged his role as vice Chairman of the Legal Committee for eleven years and his election to the position of Chairman of the Committee since 2010.
The citation also noted his roles as Chairman of the Drafting Committee at the Diplomatic Conference for the adoption of the Protocol to the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 1974, and Chairman of the Drafting Committee at the Diplomatic Conference for the adoption of the Protocol of 2010 to the International Convention on Liability and Compensation relating to the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea, 1996.
His other contributions to the work of the IMO in various endeavours were also acknowledged.
Dr. Mbiah’s was also given recognition for his contribution of articles and papers to various journals and publications.
Tribute was also paid to Dr. Mbiah’s service as a delegate of Ghana to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), especially in respect of the development of the Rotterdam Rules on the Carriage of Goods by Sea 2009.
The sterling qualities exhibited by Dr. Mbiah as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority as well as his contributions to the development of the Maritime Industry in the West African sub-region, culminating in the receipt of various awards for excellence and leadership, were extolled in the citation.
