The Ghana Tourism Authority has expressed worry about the practice whereby some hotels price their items and services in dollars. Many real estate developers including four to five star hotels openly price and advertise their items in dollars without due notice to the Central Bank. Although the local currency is the official legal tender for payments, most bodies and institutions do not accept it as a means of payment, thereby enforcing an impression of unofficially dollarising the economy. But in an interview with Joy Business, Director of Events at the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ben Anane-Nsiah said the issue has been discussed with the Central Bank and all operators to find “a workable arrangement that does not contravene the law”. Whilst steps are being taken to properly regulate the practice, he also conceded that there may be a few exceptions. He stated, for instance, lot of people deal with a lot of international traffic, and would understand the quotation in dollar better. However, he said people should be allowed to pay the cedi equivalent in instances where prices have been quoted in dollar.
