The National Insurance Commission is warning owners of commercial buildings who do not have fire certificates to immediately acquire them or face the full rigors of the law.
The Insurance Act enjoins the owners to insure their properties against fire and allied hazards.
Some owners often blame their failure to abide by the law on administrative delays and the associated high-cost.
But speaking to Maxx Business at a workshop on Compulsory Insurance for Commercial buildings, the Western Sector Manager for the National Insurance Commission, Kwadwo Appiah, said it was time owners of commercial buildings insured their property or be sanctioned.
“If you have a commercial property, and you don’t take commercial insurance then the law can take its own force on you,” he said.
Mr Kwadwo Appiah explained that since people transact business within your property, it becomes your duty to protect anybody that comes in and out.
He added that it is the responsility of the owners instead of government to insure such public properties.
