Government intends to take-advantage of the various rivers across the country to build small dams to boost the country’s energy supply.
This would be through a partnership with the Canadian government.
President Mahama revealed this in a Joint news conference with visiting Governor-General of Canada, Right Honorable David Johnston at the Flagstaff House. He said this is part of initiatives Ghana hopes to benefit from its bi-lateral relations with Canada.
“Ghana is criss-crossed tributaries of the Volta River and there is this technology that Canada has developed quite significantly that produces small amount of energy like 5mega Watts. But the rates at which we are growing any addition to our generation mix especially from renewable sources would be very important. And so we’ve discussed with the High Commissioner and they are going to send us some information on it and if possible we would send a delegation to look at how they’ve done it and replicate it here” he said.
The Canadian Commercial Co-operation, CCC invested in the T3 Aboadze Thermal plant inaugurated about a month ago. The plant is now generating 130 Mega Watts and President Mahama says plans are underway to double its capacity.
“Currently we’re doing a tender for the second phase of that project and CCC is hoping to finance it. That would increase the power produced from 130 to 260 Mega Watts which would be a significant addition to our generation” he added.
