A Magistrates' Court in Accra has declined jurisdiction to hear the case in which some persons are being held by the state for allegedly engaging in arson.State Prosecutors brought before the court the two suspected arsonists who they accuse of setting fires to some markets in the country. The prosecutors sought leave of the court to continue to detain the suspects whilst they conduct thorough investigation into the matter. But the court, presided over by Mrs. Emelia Abruquah, declined jurisdiction over the matter. It is still not clear what charges have been preferred against the suspects but lawyer for the suspects Carl Adongo is livid. He told the Court the continued detention of his clients is a gross violation of their rights. So far three out of the five suspects arrested have been granted bail. The lawyer said the suspects have been held beyond the 48 hours stipulated by law and must be charged and duly brought before court so they can prove their innocence. He described as untenable claims by the prosecution that it needs more time to thoroughly investigate the matter. The suspects have since been taken to the Regional Police CID headquarters. The lawyer is currently at the CID HQ trying to secure bail for the suspects failure of which he has threatened to go to the High Court to secure bail for them.
