Traders and hawkers displaced from the Central Business District of Accra who could not get allocation at the new facility built by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly at Odawna, have been urged to take advantage of the empty stores and stalls in markets located in the outlying communities of the capital. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr James O Mills, Secretary of the Domiabra Area Council of the Ga West District Assembly, said four sheds and 432 stalls at the Ngleshie Amanfro Market Complex had been empty since 2002. He appealed to the various traders associations in Accra to encourage their members who could not be allocated with space at the Odawna Hawkers Market to approach the Ngleshie Amanfro Market Complex Committee for stores, stalls and space for their activities. Mr Mills explained that the market, which was on the main Mallam Junction - Kasoa Highway within the Greater Accra Region was a few kilometres from Accra. The Secretary of the Area Council appealed to the District Assembly and the Department of Feeder Roads to construct a road from Domiabra Mamomo through Tomefa to Ngleshie Amanfro to facilitate the transportation of farm produce, fish, commodities and people to the market and facilitate the development of the area. He said that would also open up the Obom-Domiabra constituency and help the District Assembly to generate more revenue for development. The Market Secretary, Pastor Okpoti Annang, asked traders who were displaced as a result of the decongestion exercise to register for allocation, adding that, the market had facilities for bulk breaking since the area was noted for foodstuffs such as cassava, cassava dough, corn and fish. Pastor Okpoti Anang stated that facilities such as cold stores for the storage of vegetables, fish, meat and other foodstuffs would be provided very soon. He appealed to traders dealing in such commodities to take advantage of the opportunity instead of folding up their businesses as a result of the decongestion exercise in Accra. Pastor Anang appealed to hawkers who were commuting from communities in the Ga West District to trade in Accra to register to do business at the Amanfro Market to earn their living and contribute to the development of the area. He also asked people living in the area to do their shopping at the market instead of travelling to Accra to purchase commodities they could buy within their proximity to save the cost of transport and their time while promoting trade and commerce in the area. The Market Secretary also appealed to commercial and industrial establishments to open their outlets at the market to boost their sales and expand their operations. He appealed to the District Assembly to extend amenities such as pipe-borne water to ensure the sale of wholesome food to ensure public health and sanitation and electricity to enhance security at the market Source GNA
