The controversy surrounding the whereabouts of the Managing News Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Mr. Kenneth Agyei Kurankye continuous as a lawyer accuses the Ghana Prison Service violating the human rights of the inmate.
Human Rights Lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi argues that for a 10-day sentence, the juggling of the prisoner around, to the extent of denying family members the opportunity to see him is strange.
Speaking on Adom News, lawyer Appiah-Kubi said under the prisons regulations, a prisoner can be taken to any prison but the families have to be informed, adding the a public prison is not a secret place.
He therefore described the repeated movement of Kuranchie as unfair and ‘capricious’.
Meanwhile, a member of the Young Patriots Group, Richard Nyamah says President John Mahama and the National Security Coordinator would stand to blame if anything happens to Kuranchie.
Nyamah is also accusing government of influencing the movement of Kuranchie from one prison to the other as a way of ‘punishing’ him, something the group believes is an abuse of the human rights of the prisoner.
Civil Rights Group Ashanti Watch has also cautioned the Ghana Prisons Service not to do anything to create the perception that there is political influence behind the transfer of the inmate.
The President of the group, Mr. Andrew Kwasi Agyepong said the treatment meted out to Kuranchie has created a state fear and panic in the public.
But the Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Prisons Service, Courage Atsem has denied allegations of violating the rights of the inmate, saying that such transfers are normal in the prison service.
He said Kuranchie was transferred for his own safety and his relatives were informed when the transfer becomes necessary, as is the practice in the prisons service.
