Dr. Edward Nasigri Mahama has for the fourth time been elected the presidential candidate of the Peoples National Congress (PNC) to contest election 2008.
The medical practitioner was elected at the Party’s national delegates’ congress which took place in the Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga on Saturday, December 1, 2007.
Dr. Mahama won the election with 534 votes and his only opponent Prof. Yakubu Saaka polled 400 votes.
Dr. Mahama who led the party in three previous elections did not win any significant votes. In the last elections in 2004, he won only a mere 1.93% of all votes cast in the presidential election.
He is however, optimistic that the 2008 election will be different because he is poised to do a lot more than he did previously to win more votes for the party.
The PNC also elected new executives. Bernard Monah won the contest for General Secretary with 691 votes to beat two other opponents, Dr. Sontim Tobiga and Santuah Niagia.
Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan was retained as Party Chairman, the National Treasurer position went to David Apasare, Bayelga Haruna was elected National Organiser and Emmanuel Wilson was elected Youth Orgainser.
