Traders at the Tema Community 1 Market are threatening to go on a demonstration against the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) if they do not fix the badly broken sewage system that passes through the market.
The traders said they had endured the stench and ugly sight for far too long because the sewage leaks continuously and the TMA do nothing about it, in spite of several complaints.
When Adom News visited the scene on Tuesday the liquid waste from the broken sewer was flowing out like water from a broken pipe and the market women were busily re-directing the flow with brooms.
“The stench emanating from the leakage was unbearable,” Adom News Reporter Kofi Assan reported. “It is a sorry scene here in the market,” he added.
He said visitors to the market had to walk through the market holding their noses.
The market women complained that the leakage and stench have affected sales in the market as most of their customers feel uncomfortable coming to them to buy.
"Residents, businesses and visitors are sick and tired of the scene and stench in the market and we are losing out big time,” the lamented.
The traders are therefore threatening to embark on strike if nothing is done about it.
"We need to know what exactly is causing it, and whoever is responsible for dealing with it must be held to account" they demanded.
