Government has promised to investigate claims by traders that activities of its newly formed revenue taskforce are unduly delaying procedures traders go through in clearing goods from the Tema port. The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) in a statement asked government to suspend operations of the taskforce to deal with the problem. The taskforce was set up to block leakages at the various ports in the country and shore up government revenue generation. As at June 24 government indicated that more than GH¢60,000 had been recovered by the “Special Operations Unit” constituted by President John Mahama. The figure according to government was recovered from just one of the many routes through which goods enter the country. However, President of GUTA, George Ofori, told Joy News the Association's members endure embarrassing supervision and harassment. According to him, sometimes their cargoes are delayed without any justifiable explanation from the taskforce. But government says in as much as it wants to make the clearing procedures less cumbersome, it is mindful of miscreants who want to take advantage of the system to cheat the state.Felix Kwakye Ofosu , Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, has promised government will look into the allegations and take appropriate steps soon.
