A political scientist is arguing that if the NPP really believe their man - Nana Akufo-Addo - was robbed of a victory, then it is their duty to ensure he contests again in 2016.
According to Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, a senior political science lecturer with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, there is nothing wrong if Nana Akufo-Addo wants to run again after suffering two defeats - one at the hands of late President Evans Atta Mills and another by John Dramani Mahama.
The political future of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has become a topical issue within the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP). A huge lobby led by Ashanti Regional chairman F.F Antoh, and the National General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie are pushing for the 2012 NPP flagbearer to go unopposed as a third-time presidential candidate.
The 2012 presidential candidate has said he wants to rest with his family after his latest attempt to use the courts to unseat President John Dramani Mahama failed. The party, disappointed in the judgment, alleged the 2012 presidential polls was massively flawed in favour of the sitting president.
Dr. Amoako Baah explains that if the "NPP people genuinely think that they won the elections, then it is their duty to give him [Nana Akufo-Addo] another chance. If he won, then why are you worried that he can't win again", he said.
The Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology said unlike Ghana politics, Nana Akufo-Addo, if this were to be American politics, it will be over for him after contesting more than once.
Concerns over entrenched factionalism within the NPP is resurfacing as the party’s council of elders fear ongoing open lobbying for Nana Akufo-Addo to be flagbearer again can split the party.
George Ayisi Boateng, a member of the party's National Council said he was worried by the speed at which some party figures are already jabbing each other in the media over the 2016 presidential ticket.
But the political scientist says while early lobbying could be divisive, it could be worse if Nana Akufo-Addo is to shelf his intentions for too long only to declare his intention to contest later.
He said in politics if someone says he is considering his options to contest a position, it is likely he will run.
He concluded that it is not fair for the NPP to expect Nana Akufo-Addo to declare his intentions immediately after the verdict.
