World football governing body, FIFA, has expressed displeasure at the frequent withdrawal of African countries from the qualifying rounds of 2014 U17 Women World Cup to be hosted by Costa Rica.
At a recent meeting in Zurich, members of the organizing committee of 2014 FIFA U-17 female World Cup expressed worry over the inability of some African countries to honour the qualifying games.
Withdrawals
The first round of African qualifiers for the championship was characterized by many withdrawals, leaving only Zambia and South Sudan in the race, after others pulled out at dying minutes due to financial constraint.
The second round will see both sides from the first round going into a draw with Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. The teams will be paired to play home and away matches between November 1 and 3 and November 22 to 24 to determine the three countries that will fly Africa’s flag in Costa Rica.
Best record
Ghana has the best African record in the U-17 World Cup. The Black Maidens finished third in Azerbaijan in 2012.
