Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is calling on the government to suspend all contracts with private waste management company, Zoomlion to protect “Corporate Ghana as a Brand”.
The call comes on the back of a two-year ban placed on the company by the World Bank over alleged bribery in securing a World Bank-financed project, Emergency Monrovia Urban Sanitation Project in Liberia.
According to a report published on the World Bank's website, Zoomlion paid bribes to facilitate contract execution and processing of invoices.
For this reason, Zoomlion will not qualify for any contract financed by the World Bank Group for a period of two years.
On Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, President of AFAG, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie said government, the major client of Zoomlion, must withdraw all its contracts to serve as a deterrent to others.
He described the ban as a serious “embarrassment” to Ghana and a huge stumbling block to other Ghanaian businesses outside the country.
He stressed that in a highly competitive corporate world, such negative act which is a “black spot on Ghana’s image” should not be treated with kid gloves.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie underscored the need for government to institute serious investigation into the issue and sanction Zoomlion accordingly.
“AFAG is also calling on government to consider enacting a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act to govern the conduct of Ghanaian business globally”.
He feared if government fails to act on the issue; it could have a long–term repercussion on Ghanaian businesses internationally.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie said though AFAG has over the years championed the course of growing indigenous businesses, it will not support any Ghanaian business which engages in corruption.
