The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has served notice it will instruct the Finance Minister to to withhold government’s budgetary support to the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC).
This follows the reluctance of the Commission to produce its 2011 and 2012 audited accounts to the Auditor-General without any justifiable reason.
Kwaku Agyemang Manu MP for Dormaa West and PAC Chairman, said the Atomic Energy Commission has shown blatant disregard for Financial Regulations Act which stipulates that state agencies submit their audited accounts three months after every financial year.
Syprian Bassing, GAEC's accountant blames the situation of the lack of computers and I.T gadgets to be used in processing their financial records. The explanation was not taken. The Committee is demanding that the accountant be sanctioned.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Science, Environment, Technology and Innovation Sylvester Nomali who is leading GAEC at the Committee hearing is pleading that PAC temper justice with mercy after the committee threatened to cause the withholding of the Commission's subventions.
He says GAEC will be unable to pay workers if the Committee implements its threat. He is pleading that the sins of the accountant should not be visited on the innocent workers.
PAC is directing the board of the Commission to sanction the Accountant within two weeks.
