Presidential staffer, James Agyenim Boateng says the opposition NPP is being extremely opportunistic in its call for a probe into the claims of judicial tampering made by dismissed deputy Communications Minister, Victoria Hamah.

The NPP has petitioned the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood to institute an inquiry into allegations by Ms. Hamah that the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur played a key role in the final verdict of the election petition which declared President Mahama winner of the 2012 elections.

Although Oye Lithur has denied the allegation describing it as “untrue and preposterous”, the NPP believes a probe will protect the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

However, speaking on Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrokoo, Wednesday, James Agyenim Boateng said, he was not surprised about the NPP’s “strong propaganda” about the leaked tape.

“It is amazing the double standards [of the NPP] and people are not even ashamed about it,” he stated.

Mr. Agyenim Boateng added that the call on the Chief Justice to investigate the comments on the leaked tape smacked of hypocrisy.

“Where was the NPP when Sammy Awuku was claiming that they have judges at the Supreme Court? If that is the path to go, I accept; but the Chief Justice must also investigate the Awuku tape”.

The presidential staffer noted that Victoria Hamah’s comments on the leaked tape were not an issue becuase "it is nothing more than blabbing”.

Commenting on her dismissal, Agyenim Boateng said the president acted within his powers because he has the power to appoint and to disappoint.

Speaking on the matter, however, the Editor-in-Chief of the New crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako said he supported the call for a probe because the issue was of public interest.

He observed that though he sympathized with Ms. Hamah, the integrity of the judiciary was at stake.

“I feel very sorry for the lady because I don’t believe she has the shock absorbers to withstand the pressure but the one about Oye Lithur going to see the judges cannot be dismissed”.

Kweku Baako said the impact of that claim is “politically damaging to the lady, government, the country and the judiciary”; and must be critically interrogated to put matters to rest.
