A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy has expressed concern about the growing sense of intolerance in the party.
According to him, NPP’s pride as pioneers of democracy and freedom of speech is gradually eroding.
“NPP is too focused on attacking each other than being the voice of the ordinary people of Ghana”, Arthur Kennedy said.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy's comment was in reaction to the avalanche of insults hurled on his colleague, Dr. Konadu Apraku for calling for a total overhaul of the entire leadership of the NPP ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of TESCONA, an alumni group of the NPP student wing in Kumasi over the weekend, Dr. Apraku indicated that the NPP needs a visionary leader who can lead the party on the right path.
Dr. Apraku who is also vying for the flagbearership position of the party urged the youth to elect a winnable candidate to deliver victory for the party in 2016.
His assertions seem to have incurred the wrath of some members, who have branded him a traitor. They argue that as someone who was the campaign manager for the party in 2008 and who also worked closely with Nana Akufo-Addo, the 2012 presidential candidate of the party, Dr. Apraku should have been measured in his comments.
But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Dr. Arthur Kennedy bemoaned what he called the culture of personality attacks which is gradually creeping into the party.
He said instead of attacking the person, the attacks should focus on pertinent issues and ideas for the development of the party.
The former flagbearer aspirant of the NPP underscored the need for the leadership of the party to have constructive dialogue about who could best win election for the party without calling each other names.
Arthur Kennedy said the only way the party can win the 2016 election is to do an introspection of its activities, correct the wrongs and move forward in unity.
