Over 700 textile workers in the country say they will soon hit the streets of Accra to press home their demand for the reinstatement of the anti-piracy taskforce on textile.

The Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Union in December last year embarked on a similar protest to register their displeasure with government’s decision to suspend the work of the taskforce.

Deputy Trade Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuije suspended the swoops of the textile anti-piracy taskforce following concerns over the seizure of some 1,000 pieces of pirated textiles.
 
However, the Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Union vehemently opposed the suspension.

The Textile Workers say, almost a month after petitioning the Trade Ministry for the reinstatement of the taskforce, not much has been achieved.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, General Secretary of the Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Union, Abraham Koomson, also said employers in the sector have indicated they will embark on a redundancy exercise due declining profits.

"The way things are going, they (employers) cannot cope with it" he said.

Abraham Koomson cited high taxes and lack of available markets as some of the challenges facing the textile, garment and leather industry.

He did not state the date for the intended demonstration, but he was confident the protest will send their message clearly to government.
