Some residents of Keta want the President to investigate the selling of drugs and charging for services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to subscribers.They are threatening to embark on a massive demonstration if nothing is done about the situation at the Keta Municipal Hosptial.According to the residents, the practice is undermining government policy as well as denying the less privileged in society access to health care.A resident who accused the Hospital of selling him drugs already under the NHIS said he discovered the practice when he took his wife to seek medical care.The displeased man said he will soon battle it out with the hospital in court.He is demanding that authorities put an end to such a practice and allow the less privileged access to health care and not be paying for drugs covered by the NHIS. Another worried resident said there have been meetings with the police and the Municipal Hospital for a refund of his money spent on the drugs but all efforts have proven futile. The management of the hospital said the allegations were untrue adding the residents are just trying to destroy the image of the hospital.They said the hospital was out of drugs and in order to save lives they had to buy drugs outside for the patients. According to them, the director general sent a team to investigate the issue a few months ago after they had the complaint, but no such evidence was found.
