A taskforce comprising officials of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and some security agencies will from Monday move out to halt the quotation of goods and services in dollars.
Joy Business has gathered that the taskforce would be moving around some offices and institutions to ensure that every agency and institution comply with the new directive of the Bank of Ghana.
Mr Biadela Mortey Akpadzi, Executive Director of EOCO, said in a statement that the EOCO is acting on directives from the Attorney-General.
“Consequently, from Monday, February 24, 2014, a task force from EOCO will undertake inspections of hotels, forex bureaus, shops and all other bodies that quote prices in foreign currency to ensure that the directives are complied with.”
EOCO also noted that the deadline for the tax amnesty which was declared by government for companies and other persons liable to pay tax has long expired.
“Consequently, from Monday, March 3, 2014, a taskforce from economic and Organised Crime Office (E0C0) in conjunction with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will undertake an exercise to investigate, arrest and prosecute all companies and persons who have failed or refused to fulfil their tax obligations.”
It said the initial phase of the exercise will cover rent tax, pay-as-you-earn, withholding tax, non-registration or failure to collect VAT, failure to file VAT returns with GRA and non-filing of annual returns with GRA.
“Tax payers must note that they will only be required to show proof of payment and that any payment should be made only to the Ghana Revenue Authority.”
The taskforce, Biadela Mortey Akpadzi said, will carry the necessary identification documents and encouraged the public to demand and inspect such identification documents, and communicate any doubts to 0302663501 or 0243312610.
