Paulo Bento will lead Portugal until the end of their UEFA EURO 2016 campaign after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) agreed a two-year extension with the national team coach.
"We made an overall assessment of the period that we have worked together and we think that because of the results, processes and methods of work, commitment to the FPF and work with other technical areas of our structure, Paulo Bento should extend his contract for two more years," said FPF president Fernando Gomes.
"We are very pleased to be able to continue a project that has paid dividends not only with the senior side but also other national teams."
The 44-year-old Bento has been in charge since September 2010, guiding Portugal to the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2012 and to this summer's FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil.
"It is an honour to continue to serve my country," said the former Portugal midfielder. "I have never hidden the fact that I like working at the Portuguese Football Federation, where I feel I can continue to develop a project that aims to get results with the national team but also has a rewarding strategic aspect."
