Girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT), a day  set aside by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to create awareness and to promote technology among girls, continue to gain grounds in Ghana.

With Girls’ participation in ICT Education in developing countries said to be low, Girls in ICT is a measure aimed at equipping girls to fully participate in the current development agenda.

It is also aimed at promoting careers to a new generation of girls with an interest in Science and Mathematics to enable them compete favourably with their male counterparts.

The event which began in 2012 remains a critical policy for the Ministry of Communication, in collaboration with the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Education, Environment Science and Technology.

This year’s event, has already begun with series of activities to herald the programme.

The activities include hands-on ICT workshops promoting opportunities for girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The Director Research, Statistics and Information Management at the Ministry of Communication Madam Patricia.Dovi Sampson told Myjoyonline.com that about eight Districts in the Eastern Region have benefited from a training programme so far.

Officials from the Ghana Education Service also participated in the training workshop.

The event is expected to end in April in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

It’s on the theme ‘’Girls in ICT, Key to Innovation and National Growth’’
