Even before the month of the activity sets in, many Ghanaians have given thumbs up to the organizers of the first ever Black Stars Farewell Match with the latest being the entire technical team of the Black Stars.
The Black Stars will play against their local counterparts in an exhibition match slated for the 23rd of May 2014 at the Accra sports stadium. The match which is being organized by Primeval Media is in line with the Ghana Football Association’s aim of giving the local fans the opportunity to see their great stars one last time before they enplane to Brazil.
Coach Kwesi Appiah believes that the Black Stars Farewell Match will go a long way to boost the morale of his charges ahead of the World Cup adding that all must embrace it to make it a success.
“The first time I heard it, I wasn’t too sure what it was, but after getting the full details I realized its importance and had no choice but to give my consent as the head coach. It’s a good thing we are about to do, and I think the whole nation must embrace it to make it a success”.
Appiah sees more positives in the Farewell Match especially since some of the best players on the local scene will be showcasing their talent in front of the entire nation.
“And I hear the team will be playing against their local counterparts and that for me is good. I keep saying that the Black Stars doors are always open to any Ghanaian footballer all over the world and for me I see this as an opportunity to see the performance of some local player who might be worthy of future call ups”, Appiah added.
On his part the Team Manager of the Stars, Nii Sabhan Quaye said, if properly organized, it will serve as a yard stick for future sporting events even to the other national teams.
“We are all waiting to see how it will go, because we haven’t seen or heard anything like this before in this country. If all goes well (which I pray it does), then I believe the other national teams will also have the same treatment even before they enplane for major international tournaments. It’s a good initiative, it’s going to be like a fan fair and I personally like it”, he concluded.
