Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are protesting against what they say is the persistent interference by the university’s Dean of Students, in their affairs.
The angry students are accusing Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daaku, of perpetrating acts to render the Student Representative Council (SRC) impotent.
LUV FM's Prince Appiah reported the out-bursts of the students have been prompted by reports that the Dean of Students had prevented some students of three halls of residence from voting during the SRC elections.
The affected students from two traditional all male rival halls, Unity Hall also known as 'Conti' and the University Hall also known as 'Katanga' as well as the only all-female Africa Hall, are calling for a re-run of the poll.
The students went on a demonstration to verbally petition the Vice-Chancellor to call Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daaku to order.
Speaking to Luv News, the students accused the Dean of Students of using his influence to manipulate the electoral process in favour of his preferred candidate who won the SRC election.
They claimed that students of the three halls had been allowed to vote, his preferred choice could never have won.
"How can Dean of Students declare the winner of elections. We don't even see the independence of the Electoral Commission (EC) as the constitution stipulates", the students complained.
The Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. William Otto Ellis therefore asked the students to submit a written complaints for consideration.
Meanwhile, attempts at reaching Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daaku by Luv News to comment on the issue have proven futile.
