First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Freddy Blay, faces expulsion from the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) over comments he made suggesting he endorsed Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Key national executives of the party will on Thursday meet with to discuss allegations to the effect that Mr Freddy Blay could be chafing against the rules of the party.Mr. Blay who is also the MP for Ellembelle on a platform of the ruling New Patriotic Party last week made statements in his constituency which the party has condemned as a betrayal of the Nkrumahist fraternity.In a strongly-worded statement issued in Accra on Monday, the party said it was considering, among many options, an expulsion of Mr. Freddy Blay from the CPP as his comment “undermines the efforts of the CPP to present a credible opposition to its political rivals, particularly the NPP.”Mr Blay has refused public comments on the issue until the party comes out with a final decision on Thursday.However ahead of the meeting, some party members have risen to the defense of the MP condemning the “hype” on the issue as a mere farce.In an interview with Joy News, the party’s Western regional secretary, Kwesi Annor Zoke, claimed he was in the company of some of the party’s executives who were present at the NPP rally last week. He denied any such endorsement by Mr Blay.“He was happy the government supported him in creating the Ellembelle district in the area, that was the gist of what he said,” he stated.Mr Annor said the allegations could be a calculated attempt by some persons to break up the party.“Somebody is getting frightened and wants to bring about division in the party,” he said.He questioned how Mr Blay would at the Congress of the CPP root for Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, the party’s flag bearer, only to turn round to support an opposition figure.Mr Annor said even though the MP was not guilty, the regional executives were ready to “take in good faith” any decision by the national caucus.By Fiifi Koomson
