About 40 employees, including the General Manager of Price FM, a local radio station at Pankrono in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, have been asked to go home.
Management has assured, they have an option later to re-apply when it gives the green light at a yet-to-be determined date.
The mass lay-off, the first of its kind to hit a media house in the Ashanti Region, is to enable management carry out what officials say is vigorous restructuring of the company.
The announcement follows a meeting on Monday to discuss operations of the radio station which has been running for less than two years, and said to be breaking-even.
At what looked like an ordinary general meeting, workers received the shocking news from some station board members they met for the first time at the session.
Nhyira News investigations reveal only about four workers who were properly engaged; with appointment would be paid their April salary.
Mr. Kwaku Adu Gyamfi, who until Monday was the News Editor at Price FM says the workers were surprised to see for the first time the introduction of “some people as board of governors”.
The former News Editor who is among the four people who were given appointment letters tells Nhyira News majority of workers were “given verbal appointments”.
But he still considers himself an employee of the company because he has not been given any dismissal letter.
Despite his insistence, he is at a loss at why he would be asked to re-apply when officially; he has not been given a dismissal letter.
“The issue of re-applying was something which baffles me and I don’t know how to understand it....you ask someone to re-apply whilst the person has not been sacked or dismissed, you see...”. Mr Adu Gyamfi added.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer, Bishop Colombus Appiah, tells Nhyira News the move is not an outright dismissal of workers.
Bishop Appiah who is also founder of Jesus in All Ministries at Meduma in the Kwabre East District says management will use the period to address some of the station’s challenges.
