A judge of the Superior Court of Ghana has called for an emergency meeting of the country’s senior judges.
In a confidential letter addressed to the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood, the judge who has not been named is calling for an emergency meeting of judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal to look at the administration of justice in the country and the relevance of the judicial oath to a judge.
According to a Citi News report, the letter was leaked to the radio station and it did not disclose the name of the judge who wrote the letter.
The letter was dated June 19, 2008 and comes on the heels of the conviction and sentencing of former Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) boss, Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata.
While the judge’s action might not be unusual, its timing has the possibility of raising questions over the integrity of the Ghanaian judiciary or possible disquiet among senior judges over the administration of justice in the country.
The Judiciary in Ghana has come under severe criticisms in recent years. Indeed, one time Chief Justice, the Late Justice George Kingsley Acquah had on occasions openly complained about corruption in the judiciary. He is reputed to have initiated actions to rid the judiciary of such acts. He is also known to have initiated reforms to improve the administration of justice in the country, before his untimely death in March 2006.
Meanwhile in a prompt reaction on Citi FM, the Communications Director of the Judicial Service, Mr. Addo Darkwa Kwapong, has said that the Chief Justice has already replied to the letter and agreed that such a meeting will come on, but no date has yet been fixed.
