Landowners have been called upon to make land available to local authorities for the construction of sports infrastructure to unearth sports talents and also promote sports at the local level and ensure the good health of the people.
Mr Kofi Allotey, Ga East Municipal Chief Executive made the call at the opening of this year’s Greater Accra Regional Sports Festival at Kwabenya in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday.
Six metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies are taking part in the two-day festival of soccer, athletics, netball, volleyball and table tennis.
Mr Allotey said sports has become a key source of exercise which is also a major contributor to good health and can ensure increased stamina, more efficient heart, lungs and circulatory system and also essential to prevent obesity and help control weight.
He appealed to non-governmental organizations and philanthropists in the region to assist the
district assemblies to provide some of sporting facilities since the government alone cannot shoulder all the responsibilities.
Prince Ernest Oduro-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council announced that a holiday camp would be set up create a conducive forum for the youth to get the needed training and for unearthing talents at the District levels.
In the opening Netball match, Ga East defeated Dangme East 10-2 while Accra Metro made mince meat of Dangme East with a 26-3 score.
