Government hospitals across the country will from Tuesday roll out a Nation wide policy of free maternal health care.
This follows a £42.5 million grant by the British Government. The policy was already in operation in 4 districts- Upper East, Upper West, Northern and Central Regions of Ghana.
The policy is aimed at reducing maternal mortality ratio by three quarters before 2015.
Speaking to Joy News on Monday, Government Spokes man on Social Services Kofi Amponsah Bediako said the grant should sustain the Nation wide policy for a period of 10 years after which additional sources of funds will be contracted for the project.
He said the ante natal, delivery and post natal care expenses of maternal mothers will all be covered under the policy.
According to the Director General of the Ghana Health Service Dr. Elias Sory, the new policy will facilitate access to free and quality maternal delivery services to all mothers.
He emphasised that the policy will be integrated into the National Health Insurance Scheme to ensure a quick re-imbursement of monies expended by health facilities under the policy.
