Nigeria’s U-15 football team at the on-going African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana have lived up to the charge given to them in Abuja May 15, 2014 by the Minister of sports, Dr. Tammy Danagogo that the country expects nothing short of the gold medal from them.
Dr. Danagogo had during his unscheduled visit round the camps of Team Nigeria at the Abuja National Stadium met with the football team at the FIFA Goal Project and charged them that Nigeria being a force to reckon with in youth football expects nothing short of the gold medal from the team.
The coaches and players responded to the minister’s charge by assuring him that they were happy with the preparation they had received and that they will surely return with the gold medal to which the minister said that he would be happy to take them and all the other winners at the Games to the president who he described as “ a sports loving president”.
And yesterday at the University of Botswana football pitch, the U-15 team crossed their last and toughest hurdle towards getting the gold when they beat Tanzania 2-0 to remain tops in the round robin format of the event.
Before both sides met, Nigeria and Tanzania shared same points of 7, having won two matches and drawn one each. Yesterday’s victory puts the team ahead on 10 points from four matches and need only a draw against weaklings Swaziland on Friday to be crowned African champions.
The victory was celebrated by a retinue of Nigerian officials led by acting Chef de mission, Dr. Bolaji Ojo-Oba who joined the band of Nigerian supporters from the Volleyball girls’ team who are one step into the medal zone with a match against Rwanda today in dancing at the arena to the admiration of Botswana fans who have fallen in love with the skillful Nigeria football players.
