Head of Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) ACP Angubwutoge Awuni has urged the public to cooperate with the police over impending road closures from Thursday during the ECOWAS summit.

ACP Awuni said it is in the country's best interest to ensure the safety of the more than15 Heads of State who will be in the country for the summit.

"We don't want any Head of State to get an accident in Ghana...we will put in all measures to ensure that Ghanaians are not unduly inconvenienced [by the roadblocks]. All of us have a stake in the protection of the lives of the Presidents who are visiting us", he reiterated.

ACP Awuni was speaking at a media briefing on measures the police have put in place to ease traffic frustrations that the impending roadblocks will cause. He was speaking at the Flagstaff House on Wednesday.

He however explained the roads will not be blocked throughout the day.

"One of the major roads that will be used is the Independence Avenue [a dual carriage road], so what we have decided to do is to dedicate one part of the dual carriage road to the VVIPs [Heads of State and their entourage] and the other part to the general public", he explained.

He added that even the roads dedicated the Heads of State and their entourage will open when they arrive at the summit venue or at their hotels.

He reiterated an earlier call for the public to park their low occupancy vehicles and patronise more mass transport options temporarily until the summit is over.

President John Mahama, Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, will  host leaders of the sub-region at a two-day summit in Accra on July 10 and July 11, 2014.

The mid-year summit will consider a report on the community’s main activities and projects over the first half of 2014 to be presented by the ECOWAS Commission President, Mr Kadre Desire Ouedraogo of Burkina Faso.

The Heads of State are also expected to discuss a recommendation for the introduction of biometric ID cards for all ECOWAS citizens, the Ebola virus scare in the sub-region and the abolition of residence permit requirements for all citizens within member states.
