The twenty clubs that form Ghana's two beach soccer leagues (Championship and Division 1) are set to undertake a day long beach cleaning exercise on Thursday 14th August at the La Beach Soccer Arena in Accra.
Players, officials and their respective team followers will join the La Youth Clubs Association (Layoca), La Traditional Council, and executives of the Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA) as a prelude to the re-commencement of the two leagues.
Defending Championship winners and pride of Keta, Sunset Sports and Havedzi Mighty Warriors are expected to make the long trek from Keta to join other teams including Ada Assurance, Teshie Utd, Layoca, Wuo Gbe, East Legon Sharks, Nima BSC, Dansoman BSC and Gulf Powers.
The clean-up exercise which is jointly organized by Voltic Mineral Water and Cal Bank will also see all the division 1 clubs in attendance.
These include relegated Nungua United, Tegbi Youth, Golden Eagles, Winneba Giants, Tema United and Cape Coast Warriors.
The rest are Cape Coast Warriors, African Angels, Osu Dolphins and Chokor Blue Whales.
The Cal Bank championship and the yet to be sponsored Division1 league are midway through the season which went on break for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Player/Coach of Layoca, Nii Laaye Bonney who has been playing beach soccer since 2007 said the clean-up exercise has become a tradition and a precursor to the league seasons.
‘’Thursday’s clean-up exercise has become even more significant after the recent storms that battered the La beach soccer arena’’.
Apart from the leisure and fun associated with beach soccer, this is part of our culture and lifestyle and comes just before the Homowo festival.
Meanwhile the GBSA has confirmed that the 10 Championship clubs would be presented with their outstanding appears fees totalling GHC 4,500.00 which has been released by Cal Bank.
According to George Addo, spokesperson of the GBSA, the clean-up exercise will start in the early hours of Thursday.
