A political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology (KNUST) is warning Ghanaians of a possible conflict if frantic efforts are not made to psych up the leaders and supporters of the NPP and the NDC ahead of the declaration of the result. Mr Kwesi Amakye said the high tension characterizing the aftermath of Sunday’s presidential election puts Ghana on “the fringe of political chaos”. He told Joy News’ Yaw Ansu Gyeabour the situation on the ground have been made more fragile by reports of dispute and rejection of some constituencies elections; he called for effective management of issues to forestall any dire consequence. “Looking at the management of the just ended election, the issue is that it has the potential to plunge Ghana into chaos and this should be avoided at all cost.” Mr Amakye said efforts should be made to ensure that any of the party that loses the runoff accepts the outcome “honourably” and congratulate the winner. He said it is also incumbent on the elite in the society to call the leadership of the NPP and the NDC together to engage them in negotiations. “Compromises would have to be made; if the need to pacify any side comes up it should also not be too much for Ghana to do. The crucial issue is that one of the political parties that loses should take it in good faith,” he opined.
