Motorists on the Accra-Tema motorway fear their lives are in danger as criminal attacks increase on the road.
The absence of street lights have also given cause for them to panic in fear as their lives could further be endangered through road crashes on that stretch of the road.
A taxi driver, Kwame, who spoke to Joy News’ Michaela Anderson, said without the street lights, he and motorists in general, feared being attacked by miscreants who mount illegal blocks on the road.
According to him, “without the street lights we cannot even see potholes on the road and that can cause accident on the motorway.”
He continued he could not even stop to pick passengers for fear that he could be attacked at any time.
On behalf of all the road users, Kwame urged the government to as a matter of urgency, install new street lights on the Tema motorway.
Education Director of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, DSP Alex Obeng said though the police have intensified their presence on the roads, they were helpless because of the absence of the street lights.
He called on the authorities to ensure that all the knocked down lights were replaced with new ones.
Greater Accra Highway Director, Collins Donkor also told Michaela that it would take a lot of money to get those lights fixed.
Asked how soon the lights would be fixed, he said “when we get our budget, we would fix them as soon as it’s practicable.”
Fixing a street light, he noted could cost the state GH¢6, 000.
