Waasland-Beveren head coach Ronny Van Geneugden has defended Ghana international David Addy after headbutting KV Mechelen’s Joachim Van Damme over the weekend.
The left-back was sent off in the 32nd minute after the incident against the Belgian on the nose in the full glare of the referee over an alleged racist comment.
Geneugden has emphasised that Addy is a cool, calm and decent player and suspects he might have been provoked by the alleged racist comment otherwise he will not have reacted violently against Van Damme.
“Van Damme must have said something that was very racist and provoked Addy because Addy is a quiet boy who never would have done that. Simply, I myself am surprised by his reaction,” coach Geneugden said in a post-match press conference.
Addy was not allowed by Waasland-Beveren to talk to the press after the game.
The Belgian FA is likely to look into the matter and give an appropriate sanction.
