The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has begun scrutiny of monthly allowances paid to national service personnel across the country.

The move is part of ongoing investigations following discovery of massive corruption within the National Service Scheme (NSS). 

A source close to the BNI told the local newspaper Daily Graphic that investigators have designed special vouchers for payment of August 2014 allowances.

"We had to put the payment of allowances for service personnel on hold for August because the extent of the rot was massive", the newspaper quoted in its October 7, 2014 publication.

27 district directors of the National Service Scheme were picked up after it was revealed some7.9 million Ghana cedis was lost to the state in July this year through payments made to over 20,000 ghost-names under the scheme.

BNI's scrutiny of the NSS payments will involve the establishment of  designated payment centres in parts of the country to settle arrears of all service personnel.

"Under the new method, service person will be required to get authority notes from their supervisors or heads of departments where they are currently serving. They will also be required to report with valid identification cards", the source disclosed to the Daily Graphic newspaper.

The source reiterated BNI's resolve to remove ghost names entirely from National Service Scheme payroll.
