The Governing board of the Ghana National Service Scheme has recalled two deputy directors who were part of the high ranking members of the scheme asked to step aside following a major corruption scandal that hit the scheme.

The two, Michael Kombor who is in charge of Finance and Administration and Sophia Karen Akuako in charge of operations, have been exonerated by a preliminary investigations conducted by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI).

In a statement issued and signed by the Board Chairman, Gifty Mahama Biyira, the Board said it has relinquished its temporary managerial role following the reinstatement of the two.

The National Service Scheme made the headlines for all the wrong reasons when it emerged that over 22,000 ghost names were paid monies worth over ¢7.9 million.

As part of efforts to clean the system, the head of the scheme as well as high ranking management officials were interdicted as investigations continue.

A preliminary investigation has been concluded and submitted to the Board.

At a meeting held early Wednesday, between officials of the Ministry of Education and the Board of the National Service Scheme to discuss the report of the preliminary investigation, it was concluded that a new acting head would be appointed as soon as possible to oversee the administration of the scheme.

PRESS RELEASE

1. The Governing Board of the Ghana National Service Scheme today, Wednesday, 8^th October, 2014 held a meeting with the Ministry of Education.

 

1. The Board was briefed by the Ministry of Education on the preliminary report on the on-going investigations by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI).

 

1. The Ministry has indicated to the Board that a new Acting head of the Scheme will be appointed very soon.

 

1. Meanwhile, the two Deputy Executive Directors of the Scheme, who were directed to step aside, have been recalled to resume their posts since they have not been cited by the preliminary report as briefed by the Ministry of Education. They are MR. MICHAEL KOMBOR, in charge of Finance & Administration and MADAM SOPHIA KAREN AKUAKO, in charge of Operations

 

1. Consequently, the Governing Board has relinquished its temporary managerial role.
