Lawyer for six regional directors of the National Service Secretariat, arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), has sued the government over their continuous detention.
The directors for Eastern, Northern, Upper East, Volta, Western and Greater Accra were picked up on Tuesday by the BNI.
Their arrest is in connection with ongoing investigations into the payment of 7.9 million cedis to some 22,000 non-existent national service persons in July 2014.
Their lawyer, Egbert Faibille, is asking the Human Rights Court to grant them bail because they have been kept longer than the constitutionally mandated forty-eight hours.
"We have filed an application for bail seeking for orders that the court itself should admit the six directors to bail on the basis that the constitution requires that whoever is arrested can or may be held for a period of 48 hours after which he should be brought to court or released on bail."
"It is illegal and unconstitutional for them to be held in custody," he insisted.
