Some organizations are coming up with innovative ways to tackle the water and sanitation problem within the country. Though there are other similar innovations within the country, the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WASUP) has introduced into the country another portable toilet facility.
Speaking on JoyNews MultiTV’s sanitation campaign program, ‘Clean Communities’, Issah Kabali Musah, country program manager for Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WASUP) said this portable toilet facility is hygienic and would help reduce the strain on household compound toilets and also reduce open defecation.
According to him, the coverage of sanitation in the country is very low, “In the rural areas it’s a little bit better, but when you come to the low income areas people resort to all manner of methods in disposing of their faeces.” This facility that has been introduced in to the country would help improve the sanitation situation the country is facing.
He added, “Public toilets are nothing to write home about and are just public health threats.” Even in situations where there are toilets in houses they are woefully inadequate in serving the members of the household.” This portable toilet facility can fit anywhere in a home and is convenient.
The facility has been introduced in Kumasi and is being patronized but is yet to be introduced in Greater Accra.
The facility will not be on sale but would be given out on rent basis due to maintenance issues. He said, renting the facility is affordable given the amount that people pay in a month to use public toilets.
The facility is not made in Ghana but preparations are being made to begin production in Ghana to serve the Ghanaian populace.
