The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is expected to hold an emergency Heads of State Summit next month to assess and review strategies being implemented to help curb Ebola.

The Ebola pandemic has killed more than 4,500 across West Africa.

In the worst-affected countries - Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone – over nine thousand people have been found to have the virus, which kills 70 percent of those infected.

ECOWAS Chair, President John Mahama shed more light on next month’s emergency meeting when he met a team of United Nations officials.

“We are going to break all the states to talk about what they are doing in their various countries, their preparedness and also get a brief from our three colleagues what the challenges are and what some of the problems are.”

He also talked about member states’ contribution to the ECOWAS solidarity fund.

President Mahama’s meeting with the UN discussed the world body’s efforts towards tackling the Ebola Virus Disease.

The UN is using Accra as the logistics base for its Emergency Response Against Ebola in the West African Region. 

The Chief of Staff at the UN Headquarters, Sussana Malkarra commended Ghana for the support in curbing the outbreak.
