The first ever PGA Championship will be held at the Damang Golf Course, Western Region.
According to the Executive Vice President and Head of West Africa Gold Fields, Alfred Baku, the company has been keenly involved in the promotion and development of sports in Ghana over the years.
He said this goes beyond their social responsibility in the areas of education, health, water, sanitation, infrastructure, agriculture and agribusiness.
He said “ In 2011, Gold Fields Ghana sponsored golf tournaments at the Achimota, Celebrity, and Takoradi Golf clubs therefore, sponsoring the PGA Championship is a delight for us’’.
President of PGA Ghana, Bliss Ayivor commended the company for coming on board to sponsor the competition which he hoped will be an annual event.
Ayivor said that, PGA Ghana was formed to promote the national and international interests of Professional Golfers in the country while boosting the image and also enhance the skills of members, encourage amateur and junior golfers.
He reiterated that, this will stimulate interest in the game of golf and generate an overall appreciation of the game.
He said “one of our missions is to promote golf awareness in Ghana, with an eye on the future, to educate Ghanaians about Golf as an alternative sport, and expect that this will open many doors for the Professional and for the country at large’’.
Gold Fields Ghana was the headline sponsor of the Black Stars, for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, as well as the 2008 African Cup of Nations, with approximately US$15 million for the three tournaments.
